How to Store Olive Oil

Freshness is important when it comes to storing olive oil. Fresh oil tastes great! Rancid oil tastes terrible! Moreover, unlike wine, olive oil doesn’t improve with age. Hence we need to take great efforts to ensure the oil stays as fresh as possible.

When storing olive oil, one needs to remember the following things:

Time:
Once bottled, olive oil needs to be used efficiently. Since olive oil has an 18-24 month shelf life - you’ll want to consume it sooner versus later.

Environmental Conditions:
Irrespective of the quality of the olive oil bottle caps used - the oil if stored under inadequate conditions tend to deteriorate rapidly:

  • Temperature – The optimal storage temperature for olive oil is 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Light and Oxygen – Exposure must be minimized or eliminated at all times.  So once you open a bottle, use the oil quickly. Ensure you lock the olive oil bottle caps tightly.

Note: Avoid storing olive oil by a window. Ultraviolet rays can break down an olive oil over time. At home, keep your oil in a cool, dark closet downstairs.
