Aluminum Bottle Caps and the Environment
Bottle caps can be officially defined as a closure device whose purpose is to ensure that the contents of a container stay within that container until they are ready to be used. The exterior of the cap is usually designed in a way to make it easier to open. It is not uncommon to see some type of embossing on top of the cap. This is usually to provide directions as to how to open the bottle (especially in the case of medicinal bottles). The embossing also contains the name of the brand or company.
Bottle caps are often so small that it’s easy to overlook the impact they have on the environment. If you drop one on the ground at the park or the beach, you may think it’s not a big deal. But studies found that bottle caps are one of the top items found during marine debris beach clean-ups and are the second most littered item after plastic bags.
Recycling bottle caps seems like a good option. Hence most companies prefer aluminum bottle caps to seal their products. Aluminum bottle caps such as those on spirits, wine, and other glass bottles can be recycled, however, they are quite small and either slip through in the sorting process or have the potential to jam the recycling plant machines. The best way to recycle them is to keep a collection of them until you have a few and then pop them inside into another container that you are recycling.
